Legal basis

The legal foundations of the Austrian Ombudsman Board are based on four cornerstones:

  1. Step 1: 9th Main Section of the Federal Constitution Act

The responsibilities of the Ombudsman Board are regulated by constitutional law. Articles 148a to 148j define the legal status and tasks of the AOB.

  2. Step 2: Ombudsman Act

The Ombudsman Act contains its procedures for monitoring the administration and protecting human rights.

  3. Step 3: Rules of Procedure of the Austrian Ombudsman Board

The Ombudsman Board regulates further details and the decision-making process in its rules of procedure.

  4. Step 4: Distribution of responsibilities of the Austrian Ombudsman Board

The allocation of responsibilities determines the areas of control for which the Ombudspersons are responsible.
