International Ombudsman Institute
The International Ombudsman Institute IOI was founded in 1978 and is a globally active, non-political organisation for independent administrative control bodies. The IOI is organised in six regional groups: Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific, Caribbean and Latin America, North America and Europe. There are currently more than 200 ombudsman organisations from around 100 countries. The central aim of the organisation is to promote the ombudsman concept worldwide and to support and network ombudsman institutions as well as provide training for public officials and employees.
The organisation's board is made up of 23 ombudspersons from all six regions of the world. The board is headed by President Nashieli Ramírez Hernández, who is also President of the Human Rights Commission of Mexico City.
Since 2009, the Ombudsman's Office has been the General Secretariat of the IOI, which is currently headed by Ombudsperson Bernhard Achitz.
