Recommendations of the Austrian Ombudsman Board and its commissions

As the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM), the Austrian Ombudsman Board and its commissions issue recommendations. Recommendations are made on the basis of regular monitoring visits by the commissions to facilities such as nursing homes or correctional institutions. They contain observations and measures to remedy cases of maladministration and improve the human rights situation in these facilities. They can be addressed to the authorities concerned, the legislature or the relevant institutions in order to correct undesirable developments and prevent future incidents.

The Ombudsman's Office publishes the recommendations in the second volume of its annual report entitled ‘Preventive Human Rights Monitoring’. This volume lists the observations from the commissions' activities and, at the end of each subchapter, the NPM's recommendations derived from these observations, highlighted in grey. The recommendations collected since the beginning of the mandate in 2012 can be accessed here.
