Brinek: Unbearable odor nuisance caused by a pig farm

October 30, 2010

A pig farm in southern Styria causes an unbearable odor nuisance, according to the neighbors. They also criticize that the majority of the stables was not approved by the authorities – in total, 1,500 pigs are housed.

The stables should have been eliminated according to a decision of the district authority two years ago, but until now nothing happened. Since subsequent approval proceedings are underway, the removal orders could not be enforced, argued the Office of the Styrian government in its statement.

Ombudswoman Brinek: "Here, illegal buildings were built and used which are not approved until today. The proceedings have been going on for three years now and have cost a lot of time, money and the health of neighbors." Again and again, the Austrian Ombudsman Board is facing similar cases where buildings have been built without consenus. Brinek therefore calls for stricter sanctions and fast proceedings.
