UN High Commissioner for Human Rights visits the Austrian Ombudsman Board
Austrian Ombudswoman Gertrude Brinek welcomed Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at the premises of the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) in Vienna on 29 April 2016.
After introducing the AOB’s competences, working methods and responsibilities, Ombudswoman Brinek pointed out the importance and independence of the Austrian Ombudsman Board, especially in the promotion and protection of human rights in Austria. Mr. Zaid Ra’ad Al Hussein welcomed the future oriented approach and handling of the OPCAT mandate, under which the AOB acts as a National Preventive mechanism (NPM).
During a lively discussion, topics of national as well as global importance were raised. The UN High Commissioner highlighted that Austria has demonstrated its welcoming nature during the refugee crises, but at the same time expressed concern that the restrictions for the rights of asylum seekers in Austria might have far reaching impact in other countries, too.
Finally, Ombudswoman Brinek emphasised the great engagement of the Austrian Ombudsman Board and ensured that the AOB will continue to carry out its mandate with due diligence and will under no circumstances refrain from its duty to raise awareness about human rights violations and maladministration.
