“Young PEOPLE and their RIGHTS“ – Children’s righst know no (language) boundaries

September 9, 2014

The book was written with a view to raise awareness and interest in human rights and to encourage children and young people to reflect independently on this important topic. It is exactly for this purpose, that the book “Young PEOPLE and their RIGHTS“ does not tackle this topic in a purely theoretical way, but by using actual examples taken from the real lives of children and adolescents. A total of 30 such typical, everyday life situations illustrate matters, needs and problems of young people. “You need to know your rights, in order to claim them or to fight for them if necessary – and not only for yourself but for others as well”, explains Gertrude Brinek, Ombudswoman and author of the book.

The main target audience for this publication includes children and adolescents aged 14 and over, but it should also be used as teaching material and help discuss the topic of human rights and children’s rights at school. Last but not least, it is also an interesting and informative read for parents and the general public. The Austrian Ombudsman Board encourages people to interpret this publication as a warm invitation to pay a visit to its recently inaugurated visitors center VA.TRIUM. Guided tours enable groups of students to discuss human rights, citizen’s rights and children’s rights and to learn more about the Austrian Ombudsman Board and its work.

The Austrian Ombudsman Board presented the German version of this publication (“Junge Menschen und ihre Rechte”) for the first time on 19 September 2013. An English version of the book is now also available.
